Detailed Explanation of Research Conversations
At the live Forum in Cleveland, papers will be presented in a unique "World Cafe" format. This format is designed to encourage participants to integrate and build on the ideas of their colleagues. Delegates will have the option of selecting 1 of the 12 sessions offered during each breakout. (Note: There will be 7 Research Conversation sessions and 5 Workshops occurring simultaneously.) Each 90-minute session will have approximately 30 participants and include 4-6 papers focused on a similar theme.
To open a session, each author will present a brief (2 minute) description of their work. Then, at individual roundtable discussions, each author, together with a self-selecting subset of the delegates, will briefly (approximately 5-6 minutes) overview their paper and then discuss with the group the ideas it generates (20 minutes total/roundtable). Following the first roundtable, delegates will move on to a second roundtable, giving each presenter two opportunities for in-depth discussion of their work.
Please note that this format does not allow for PowerPoint or other computer-based projection. Authors, however, are welcome to bring copies of their papers and/or any other handouts that they believe will facilitate discussion of their work and its implications.
Following the two roundtables, the entire group will discuss the ideas raised by the 6 papers. The goal for these sessions is to allow all delegates to become familiar with the most important ideas in the field and to begin to identify trends, opportunities, and challenges. Broader trends will be reported back to the plenary sessions.
